The cabinet panel has approved a month extension to present Army Chief General Manoj Pandey just six days before his slated retirement on May 24. This unusual move could impact the line of succession in the 12 lakh strong force. General Pandey took over as the 29th Army Chief in April 2022 and turned 62 this month. The delay in announcing the successor of General Pandey had already triggered widespread speculations that a super session in the military hierarchy was in the offing. The next two senior officers, Vice Chief Lt-Gen Upendra Dwivedi and Southern Command Chief Lt - -Gen Ajai Kumar Singh are also slated to retire on June 30.
