TURBULENCE SOMETIMES WITHOUT WARNING

top-news

This is the peak season for turbulences in our country on the north side caused by pre-monsoon disturbances. This hurts the cabin crew and passengers. Generally, passengers get hurt with minor injuries like bruises to fractures, sometimes cuts due to flying loose items, and burns because of spilling hot beverages. Head injuries and spine injuries also occur due to hitting the overhead compartment or windows. Sometimes this occurs without a signal of warning on the aircraft due to late detection by pilots. Turbulence can be simply defined as a chaotic and unpredictable air current, disrupted from a calmer state by various forces or steady smoke rising and fragmenting into increasing erratic swirls. Detectable turbulences are generally during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons when dark rain-bearing clouds (cumulonimbus) are built over the Indian space. These clouds are very dense and towering. Inside the air currents are rising and falling at great speed, causing disturbances inside the aircraft. The Cumulonimbus clouds are detectable by the aircraft’s weather radar. Some turbulences are undetectable such as clear air turbulence(CAT). This is very hazardous to the aircraft because it is invisible to radar and satellites. It can’t be seen by the pilots from the cockpit either. This causes a sudden drop or gain in altitude. The CAT can be predicted through SIGMET charts and generally, flight plans are adjusted accordingly. CAT is caused by fast-moving jet streams and narrow air currents that induce differences in wind speed and direction. The experts say that the increase in the number of turbulence is directly related to the climate change. The various atmospheric conditions including increased temperature differences between different atmospheric layers, jet stream changes, and thunderstorm activities also cause frequent turbulences.
